Wildlife Tracking Workshop

Taught by Jonah Evans, Wildlife Diversity Biologist, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Alpine, TX

Jonah.evans@tpwd.state.tx.us

For many species of wild animals, survival depends on being elusive and cryptic. This often makes research and detection exceedingly difficult. Recent advances in trail cameras and GPS collars enable us to detect and research some species, but require set up time and monetary investments. Animal tracks are the most efficient way to detect many species and can make detection of elusive species a simple matter. Animal tracking is used regularly in wildlife research in a wide variety of study designs and is a crucial skill for mammalogists and wildlife biologists.   Accurate identification of tracks can be difficult however and takes significant time and practice. The goal of this workshop is to jump start the learning process and will focus on identification of clear tracks in the field. We will cover field marks for tracks of common species, tracking books and resources, and tools for learning more.
